Kashima finished as runners-up in the inaugural J-League season in 1993, finishing top of the Suntory Series but losing 3-1 to Verdy Kawasaki in the Suntory Championship game. They were also beaten finalists in the 1993 Emperor's Cup - losing 6-2 to Yokohama Flugels.
Worn by Ryosuke Okuno, one half of a formidable central defense alongside Yutaka Akita. The squad also included Zico, Yasuto Honda, Tadatoshi Masuda and Hisashi Kuraki.
