Condition: 9/10

Player: #19 Lucas Radebe

Comments: Classic match-issued and signed shirt used by Lucas Radebe of South Africa on 15/11/1997 in a pre-FIFA Confederations Cup friendly between South Africa and Germany in Düsseldorf, Germany won 3-0. Unworn short-sleeve spare shirt as players ultimately all wore long-sleeves.

The starting lineups were:

  • Germany: Kahn, Helmer, Wörns, Linke, Basler, D. Hamann, Jeremies, Ziege, Häßler, Kirsten, Bierhoff
  • South Africa: Anderson, Fish, Issa, Radebe, Mkhalele, Mnguni, Augustine, Tinkler, Nyathi, Masinga, Bartlett

The shirt design with red Kappa logo, Kappa-branded numbering and flag on collar was only worn again (but with player names on reverse) against Brazil in another pre-tournament friendly and also during the tournament in December 1997 in which South Africa ultimately failed to progress from Group B.

Shirt is signed by Leeds United captain Lucas Radebe, addressed to Leeds' head groundsman John Reynolds. The Chief won 80 caps for his country.

Similar designs (differing collars, materials etc) were worn by Bafana Bafana between 1993-97, notably as hosts of the African Cup of Nations in 1996 as they won their first ever international trophy as they defeated Tunisia 2-0 in the final.
