In 1995/96, they reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League after winning Group B with a perfect 6 wins from 6 games. They eventually lost to FC Nantes. In 1996/97 they reached the 2nd round of the UEFA Cup.
Domestically, Spartak won the Russian Premier League in both 1996 and 1997.
The squad included Sergey Rodionov, Viktor Onopko, Sergey Gorlukovich, Dmitriy Alenichev, Ilya Tsymbalar, Valeri Chmarov and Yuri Nikiforov.
